The Perfect 7-Day Sri Lanka Itinerary

Seven days is the sweet-spot length for a first visit to Sri Lanka — enough to see the Cultural Triangle, the hill country and a slice of the coast without feeling like you spent the week in a car. This is the route we plan most often for travellers on a standard week of leave. It runs as a smooth loop from the airport, so you never double back.

Think of it as a template, not a timetable: with a private driver-guide, every day below can shift to match your pace and interests.

At a glance

Day 1 — Arrival in Negombo

Your driver-guide meets you at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). Negombo is just 20 minutes away, so rather than battle Colombo traffic on arrival, you ease in with a beach town. Shake off the flight with a walk along the sand, the Dutch-era canal, or a fresh seafood dinner. Overnight: Negombo.

Day 2 — Dambulla & Sigiriya

Drive north into the Cultural Triangle (about 3.5 hours). En route, climb to the Dambulla Cave Temple, where five caverns hold more than 150 Buddha statues beneath painted rock ceilings. In the late afternoon, hike Pidurangala Rock for the classic golden-hour view facing the Sigiriya rock itself. Overnight: Sigiriya.

Day 3 — Sigiriya Rock, then Kandy

Start early to climb the 5th-century Sigiriya Lion Rock Fortress before the heat — past the water gardens, the lion’s paws and the summit palace ruins. Afterwards, drive to Kandy (about 2.5 hours), stopping at a Matale spice garden on the way. Arrive in time for the evening puja at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, then a stroll around Kandy Lake. Overnight: Kandy.

Day 4 — Into the hills: Nuwara Eliya

Climb into the misty highlands (about 2.5 hours). Stop at Ramboda Falls and tour a working Ceylon tea factory for a tasting and a walk through the terraces. Arrive in Nuwara Eliya — “Little England” — for its colonial post office, Victoria Park and Gregory Lake. Overnight: Nuwara Eliya.

Day 5 — The famous train to Ella

The highlight for many travellers: board the morning train from Nanu Oya to Ella (about 2.5–3 hours) through tea terraces and viaduct bridges while your driver takes your luggage by road. In Ella, hike to the Nine Arches Bridge and, for sunset, up Little Adam’s Peak. Overnight: Ella.

Day 6 — Down to the coast

Descend from the hills toward the south, pausing at Ravana Falls. From here you have a choice: a late-afternoon 4×4 safari in Yala for leopards and elephants, or straight to the coast for the beach. Either way you end at the historic Galle Dutch Fort — cobbled lanes, ramparts and a lighthouse at sunset. Overnight: Galle / Unawatuna.

Day 7 — Coast to Colombo and departure

A relaxed morning on the coast, then the Southern Expressway north to Colombo (about 2 hours) for a quick city orientation — Gangaramaya Temple, Galle Face Green, a little shopping for Ceylon tea — before your transfer to the airport.

Tips for this route

  • Book the Ella train seats ahead in peak season; reserved first/second-class fills up fast.
  • Climb Sigiriya early (around 7am) to beat the heat and the crowds.
  • Pack a light layer — Nuwara Eliya and Ella are genuinely cool at night.
  • One coast, not both — in seven days, stick to the south; save the east for a longer trip.
